I was a bit torn on the rating on this, bit decided to round it up。。。 It felt a bit more hand-wavy than I would've preferred, but it was still enjoyable and gave me some ideas。 I suppose that's good enough :) I was a bit torn on the rating on this, bit decided to round it up。。。 It felt a bit more hand-wavy than I would've preferred, but it was still enjoyable and gave me some ideas。 I suppose that's good enough :) 。。。more

I’ll be honest, I didn’t read the entire book。 I’m still gonna count it as read though, because this is my only social media and I’m here to make myself look good。Spending the last 4 years playing dress up and pretend military, I’m not a huge fan of “leadership”。 I feel like it’s a buzz word that people use so much today and it just gets beaten to death。 I read this on recommendation from my brother (stolen from his shelf)。 Maxwell does an above average job of displaying yet another leadership m I’ll be honest, I didn’t read the entire book。 I’m still gonna count it as read though, because this is my only social media and I’m here to make myself look good。Spending the last 4 years playing dress up and pretend military, I’m not a huge fan of “leadership”。 I feel like it’s a buzz word that people use so much today and it just gets beaten to death。 I read this on recommendation from my brother (stolen from his shelf)。 Maxwell does an above average job of displaying yet another leadership model。 I genuinely appreciated his chapters on Priorities, Serving People, and Self-Discipline。 Most of the book felt like a few valuable thoughts pieced together with quotes and stories from famous people。I will admit, though, that this book caused me to consider and reflect on my leadership。 This is the first time somebody admitted that you can lead outside of a professional or organizational structure (CEO, manager, XO)。 That’s dope。 I want to lead my friends, as a friend, by being a friend。 Definitely some valuable thoughts to take away。 。。。more

Years ago I created a People Development course, and recently added a second course to make it a two-course sequence。 This book will be an excellent addition to the sequence。 Maxwell's books are tremendously well organized。 It's easy to draw the main points out。 And he writes really well。 Highly recommended。 Years ago I created a People Development course, and recently added a second course to make it a two-course sequence。 This book will be an excellent addition to the sequence。 Maxwell's books are tremendously well organized。 It's easy to draw the main points out。 And he writes really well。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

This was given to me by a loved one who read it and thought it was great information。 Although it took me a bit longer to finish, I did enjoy reading this through Mr。 Maxwell's perspective。 There is so much information about leadership and just growth in general。 It definitely had me thinking about some things in my life and how I would want to change things or do things differently。 I would definitely recommend this for anyone is wanting to get more insight on leadership in general, what makes This was given to me by a loved one who read it and thought it was great information。 Although it took me a bit longer to finish, I did enjoy reading this through Mr。 Maxwell's perspective。 There is so much information about leadership and just growth in general。 It definitely had me thinking about some things in my life and how I would want to change things or do things differently。 I would definitely recommend this for anyone is wanting to get more insight on leadership in general, what makes a good leader, and growth (both inside the role of a leader and outside of it)。 This book definitely gave me a lot of perspectives on life。 I look forward to reading more books by John Maxwell。 Definitely worth the read。 。。。more

Very useful but overly wordy!I found this book to be best read not as a step-by-step manual - there are just too many points made on each subject。 Instead, I found it useful when browsing through, looking for inspiration, new ways to think about an issue。 Pick the points that resonates well with you, practice for a while, and then come back for more ideas。

Like many leadership books this is filled with exhortations to build a vision, build a following, and stay passionate。 Maxwell is a good writer, and his stories are helpful in driving home the main idea of the section he is discussing。 The 10 chapters each focus on different aspects of being a good leader。 Throughout Maxwell points to Scripture for his basis。 This book could use an update, for many of the church leaders that he quotes have gone astray and proven to be antithetical to the main pr Like many leadership books this is filled with exhortations to build a vision, build a following, and stay passionate。 Maxwell is a good writer, and his stories are helpful in driving home the main idea of the section he is discussing。 The 10 chapters each focus on different aspects of being a good leader。 Throughout Maxwell points to Scripture for his basis。 This book could use an update, for many of the church leaders that he quotes have gone astray and proven to be antithetical to the main premises of the book。 。。。more

We've all known leaders, whether in our professional lives or the public sphere, that make us wonder how the the fudge they ever got that position。 Too often, leaders are handed positions of power simply because they have lengthy experience or a golden reputation, and those who appoint them believe they'll grow into a leader over time。 Which makes sense, because every position of leadership is wholly unique to that specific group, the team they lead, the goals they have, and the time period and We've all known leaders, whether in our professional lives or the public sphere, that make us wonder how the the fudge they ever got that position。 Too often, leaders are handed positions of power simply because they have lengthy experience or a golden reputation, and those who appoint them believe they'll grow into a leader over time。 Which makes sense, because every position of leadership is wholly unique to that specific group, the team they lead, the goals they have, and the time period and circumstances under which they're leading that team。 What Maxwell quickly and adeptly points out is that the best leaders learn how to lead before they formally become leaders。 They learn how to influence, listen, and grow, to where becoming a leader just "fits" them once the opportunity presents itself。This book was incredibly powerful in the way Maxwell breaks down the components of leadership into concepts like how to build character and trust, what your attitude should be, and how to develop ambitious but realistic visions。 It's the kind of book you may read multiple times, or keep on a nearby shelf to consult when, as a leader, you find yourself at a crossroads。 Everything is broken out into helpful lists and groups to both make it easier to find exactly what your looking for and keep you mindful of the concepts as he covers them。 The only things that kept this book from a perfect score, for me, were, firstly, his tendency to brag。 Granted, the guy's accomplished an awful lot, but when referencing his own experiences, his extensive bibliography came up no less than a dozen times。 And on a second, lesser note, he admits to working with a ghostwriter, which is perfectly understandable。 But for someone who boasts about his writing accomplishments and the millions of books he sold, I always have an issue when the ghostwriter is treated like a typewriter--just another tool。 Knowing that he basically just dictated this book to someone else undercuts those boasts。 Yes, it's still his ideas, but the actual act of writing, organizing, typing, proofreading, and formatting can be anywhere from 25-90% of the book writing process。 Like I said, more a pet peeve than a knock。 And lastly, I didn't care for when his great ideas spilled over into an attitude of "If you want it enough, you can have it。" There was one small section where he basically accused underachievers of just having the wrong mindset。 That can happen for some, but obviously we're not all as privileged。 Sure, mentioning this might undercut his message of, "You have to fight for what you want," but its dismissiveness rubbed me the wrong way。All that said, this is still a great book on leadership。 I checked out one of his podcasts and would recommend this book over that because, in this format, the ideas are distilled。 As you can imagine, as a pastor, he has a tendency to speak live in a preachy, repetitive, awestruck manner that leans more "motivational speaker," than "knowing expert。" The good here far outweighs the bad, and I'd recommend this to anyone who currently does, or plans to someday, lead others。 。。。more

This re-boot book flirts with the cynical mindset of newer gangster guides to success but comes from a minister dressing it up in Scriptures。 We may all be sinners but I don't think we are all Nixon, as the author suggests。 Otherwise, there's just not anything special in here。 This re-boot book flirts with the cynical mindset of newer gangster guides to success but comes from a minister dressing it up in Scriptures。 We may all be sinners but I don't think we are all Nixon, as the author suggests。 Otherwise, there's just not anything special in here。 。。。more
